ABOUT 3 JAW CHUCKS

A three-jaw chuck is a type of chuck you use to hold and rotate cylindrical workpieces securely on a lathe or a similar machine tool. It consists of three jaws,  and they are usually equally spaced around the chuck body. These jaws are adjustable simultaneously by a scroll mechanism that is inside the chuck.

The primary advantage of a three-jaw chuck is its ability to hold cylindrical workpieces with minimal setup time. When you tighten the chuck, the jaws move inward simultaneously, gripping the workpiece firmly from multiple sides.

This design ensures that the workpiece is accurately in the center, which is essential for machining operations such as turning, drilling, and milling.

Three-jaw chucks are commonly used in machining applications due to their simplicity, versatility, and efficiency. However, they may not be suitable for holding irregularly shaped or delicate workpieces, as the pressure exerted by the jaws can cause distortion or damage. In such cases, opt for specialized chucks or fixtures  instead.
